In addition the tabel gives direction for the product use starting with the paint product reduction, atomizing air pressure at the gun, flash or tack times between coats, number and type of coats, force drying schedule, drying time, driying time before polishing (if material requires polishing), and dry time before delivery.

The tabel information is there to help the user to obtain the maximum from the packaged product and does not go into the why’s or wherefore’s that are likely to occur if the users do not follow the provided recommendations.

That factor which have an influence on both undercoats and topcoats during and after application are:

Surface preparation

Paint problem or failure that stem from improper surface preparation (cleaning, treating or removal of defects) are costly.Properly prepared surfaces, be they various metals, fiberglass or organic substrates must be both sound and chemicallly clean. These two factors are essential in order for applied products to obtain their expected adhesion and durability.

By definition, sound substrate (metal or organic) are those that are completely free of defect that could affect the design limits of subsequent coatings (undercoats or topcoats). Conversely, unsound substrate are those that are not free of defects.

A. Unsound Metal Substrate:

A metal substrate tahat has ben degraded by microscopic or visible rust or oxidation present with or on the sbstrate are example of an unsound substrate. These type of defect ust be removed first by the use of both mechanical and chemical means.

Type of failure normally associated with coating over unsound metal substrate are:

1. Early loss of adhesion in the form of rusting, peeling or chipping.
2. Early blistering of coating after exposure to moisture.

B. Unsound Organic Substrate:

Un organic substrate that has been degraded by film breakdown such as checking, chalking, low glosss or humidity blistering, are example of an unsound substrate and sould be completely removed prior to recoating.

The type of failure normally associated with coating over an unsound organic substrate are:

1. Telescoping of the previous defect such as splitting, cracking, or micro checking up through the newly applied coating after the coatings have thoroughly dried down.
2. Newly applied coatings are soaked up and their adhesion properties are degraded by film breakdown such as chalking or low gloss.
3. The adhesion properly of the newly applied coating is degraded to the level of substrate.

In the case, note. Humidity blistering may stem from either an unsound metal and/or organic substrate. The weakness allows the penetration of moisture, therefore lossening the bond of organic coatings.
